Elizabeth Benotti

Artist's Statement:

The home is a sacred and personal space, but sometimes you can take the importance of everyday objects for granted.  It is worthy to surround yourself with meaningful objects that are well cared for. My work is a small part in helping to bring back an appreciation for handmade, quality goods.

My name is Elizabeth Benotti and my work explores the relationships between everyday objects, color, image and form.  Using porcelain, I interchange slipcasting, handbuilding and wheelthrowing techniques. The objects act as a canvas for drawings that can be found on most of my work. The drawings are all inlaid into the clay using a traditional mishima process and the decorative colors are hand painted.

I was born and raised in Massachusetts then headed west to study ceramics, where I received a BFA at the University of Colorado in Boulder. It was there that I took my first ceramics class and fell in love with the material, process and the community it creates. Upon graduation I was accepted into the Resident Artists program at the Mendocino Art Center nestled on the northern coast of California. I was able to work alongside a small group of dedicated artist who are now close friends. Currently I reside in Eliot, ME and create all the wares in my Rollinsford, NH studio.
